National Geographic World Music

National Geographic, 2006

Challenge

Give National Geographic the ultimate world music destination

The National Geographic Society is one of the world's largest nonprofit educational and scientific organizations. Its mission is "to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge while promoting the conservation of the world's cultural, historical and natural resources."

With the hope of combining its editorial and photographic content with music, National Geographic approached Carbon Five to build National Geographic World Music. Carbon Five's solution would need to manage, relate and display thousands of songs, artists, regions and genres from multiple data sources.

Solution

A fast, fresh and rich media site

National Geographic World Music launched in May 2006, and instantly became the most content-rich world music Web site on the Internet. The Web site launched with more than 50,000 interrelated content items; National Geographic editors add and update the site weekly, keeping the site fresh and exciting.

To accomplish this, Carbon Five deployed its CMS platform. Our team worked with National Geographic's design and content providers to quickly define content types, then imported the seed content from an existing database. Carbon Five created a rich front end with AJAX browse widgets so that users have quick access to interesting content.

Value

A constantly evolving, living organism

Working with Carbon Five, National Geographic was able to launch the Web's most robust and rich world music site in just a couple of months. By using a CMS platform well-suited to its needs, National Geographic was able to keep costs low and to give its editorial staff full authority over this lively site.
